Understanding the pair
In AUD/JPY the Australian Dollar is the base currency and the Japanese Yen is the quote currency. The rate tells you how many JPY one AUD buys, so a rising AUD/JPY means the Australian Dollar is strengthening against the Japanese Yen.
AUD/JPY is a minor (cross) pair: it combines two major currencies without the US dollar, so its rate is effectively the product of two dollar pairs and spreads are typically a little wider than the majors. In practice its price moves with AUD/USD and USD/JPY (or their inverses).
Prices are quoted to 3 decimal places here. One pip is 0.01, so on a standard lot of 100,000 AUD a one-pip move is worth 1,000 JPY — use the pip calculator to convert that into your account currency.
Liquidity in AUD/JPY is usually deepest when both home markets are open — the Sydney (07:00–16:00 Sydney time) and Tokyo (09:00–18:00 Tokyo time) sessions. See live session times on the market hours clock.
Often treated as a commodity and China-sensitive currency because Australia is a large exporter of iron ore, coal and LNG. It tends to be sensitive to global growth and risk sentiment.
Central bank: Reserve Bank of Australia
Decades of very low Japanese interest rates made the yen a common funding currency in carry trades, and it often strengthens when global risk appetite falls. JPY pairs are quoted to two or three decimals, so a pip is 0.01.
Central bank: Bank of Japan
AUD/JPY shows how many Japanese Yen (JPY) one Australian Dollar (AUD) buys. AUD is the base currency and JPY is the quote currency. If the rate rises, the Australian Dollar has strengthened against the Japanese Yen.
No. It is derived from the euro foreign exchange reference rates published by the European Central Bank once per working day around 16:00 CET. It is useful for reference, budgeting and calculator inputs, but it is not an executable trading quote — a broker's bid and ask will differ.
By convention one pip in AUD/JPY is 0.01 because the pair is quoted in JPY. On a standard lot of 100,000 AUD, a one-pip move is worth 1,000 JPY. Brokers may quote an extra decimal (a pipette).
Liquidity is typically deepest when both home markets are open: the Sydney (07:00–16:00 Sydney time) and Tokyo (09:00–18:00 Tokyo time) sessions, and especially where they overlap.
