Data Sources

Where FXPIPS ONLINE gets its exchange rates, metals, crypto, macro data and economic calendar — all free sources that need no API key. None are live quotes.

Contents

FXPIPS ONLINE displays market data to support learning, for example in the Currency Converter and on market pages such as Cryptocurrency. This page explains where that data comes from, how fresh it is and how to interpret it.

Important: No data on this site is a live, executable quote. Data may be delayed, a daily reference value or historical. Do not use it to place trades. Your broker's prices will differ.

How we classify data

ClassificationMeaning
ReferenceAn official benchmark published once per period (for example, once per working day). Useful for comparison and conversion, not for trading.
DelayedA market price that was current at the time it was fetched but may be minutes old, or older, by the time you see it.
HistoricalPast observations, such as daily or monthly series, used for charts and context.

Wherever practical, data on the site is labelled with its source and the date or time it refers to.

Exchange rates: Frankfurter (ECB reference rates)

  • Provider: Frankfurter, an open-source API that republishes the euro foreign exchange reference rates published by the European Central Bank (ECB).
  • Classification: Reference (and historical for past dates).
  • Update frequency: The ECB publishes reference rates once per working day, usually around 16:00 Central European Time, except on TARGET closing days. Rates on our site therefore change at most once per working day and do not move during the day.
  • Coverage: The ECB set covers around 30 currencies quoted against the euro. Rates between two non-euro currencies (for example, USD to INR) are cross rates calculated from the two euro rates.
  • Attribution: Exchange rate data: European Central Bank reference rates, via Frankfurter.
  • Note: The ECB states that its reference rates are published for information purposes only. Using them for transactions is not encouraged.

Learn more in our article on how we use ECB reference rates, and on the ECB website: https://www.ecb.europa.eu

Crypto prices: CoinGecko

  • Provider: The CoinGecko public API, which aggregates cryptocurrency prices from many trading venues.
  • Classification: Delayed. Prices are fetched periodically and may be cached, so the value you see may be several minutes old or older.
  • Update frequency: Refreshed periodically; the displayed time indicates when the data was retrieved where shown.
  • Attribution: Data provided by CoinGecko (https://www.coingecko.com).
  • Note: Crypto prices differ between exchanges. An aggregated price is an indication, not a price you can trade at.

World currencies: ExchangeRate-API

  • Provider: The free open-access endpoint of ExchangeRate-API (https://www.exchangerate-api.com), used for the 160+ currencies the ECB does not publish (for example the UAE dirham, Saudi riyal or Nigerian naira) in the world currency converter.
  • Classification: Reference (indicative daily mid-market rates, not ECB rates and not a dealing quote).
  • Update frequency: Once per day.
  • Attribution: Rates By Exchange Rate API.

Precious metals: gold-api.com

  • Provider: The free gold-api.com spot-price API (gold, silver, platinum, palladium and copper). Its terms permit commercial use and state that it gives no guarantee of accuracy.
  • Classification: Delayed / indicative. It is not the LBMA benchmark price and not a tradable quote; official benchmark publishers are linked on the Gold and Silver pages.
  • Update frequency: Refreshed every few minutes. Rupee prices per 10 grams are converted with the ECB reference USD/INR rate and exclude import duty, GST and dealer premiums.

Economic calendar: Federal Reserve Board and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

  • Providers: FOMC meeting dates from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, and release dates and scheduled times (CPI, jobs, PPI and more) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics release schedule. Both are public-domain U.S. government sources.
  • Classification: Reference (official schedules). Market forecasts (consensus) are proprietary and are not shown. The latest published figures (actual values) come from the official series listed below.

Macro and commodity series: FRED

  • Provider: FRED, the economic database of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. We use only public-domain U.S. government series: EIA oil prices, the Federal Reserve's broad dollar index, and BLS, BEA and Federal Reserve statistics. No API key is required (we read FRED's public data download).
  • Classification: Historical (and reference for official statistics).
  • Update frequency: Depends on the series. Some are daily, others weekly, monthly or quarterly, and many are published with a lag after the period they describe. Official statistics may be revised after first release.
  • Attribution: Source: Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, FRED (https://fred.stlouisfed.org), with the original data source named for each series where applicable.

What we do not show, and why

  • Stock index levels (S&P 500, Nifty 50 and others) and the ICE U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) belong to their index providers and need a licence even when delayed. We link to the official publishers and show the Federal Reserve's broad dollar index instead.
  • Live, tradable FX quotes and bid/ask spreads require a broker or market-data licence.
  • Consensus forecasts for economic releases are proprietary.

Limitations

  • Third-party providers can experience outages, delays or errors. If a source is unavailable, the site may show older data or no data.
  • Converted and cross rates are calculated and may differ slightly from rates quoted elsewhere because of rounding.
  • Data is provided "as is" for education. See our Terms of Use and Risk Disclaimer.
