Definition
ResistanceResistance is a price level or zone where a rising market has repeatedly stalled because selling pressure has tended to outweigh buying pressure there.
Example
If USD/CAD rallies to around 1.3800 three times in a month and falls back each time, traders mark 1.3800 as resistance.
In detail
Resistance is a ceiling on the chart. It appears where sellers have previously stepped in, or where buyers have previously taken profit. Each time price reaches the area, traders remember what happened before and may act the same way again, which can reinforce the level.
Resistance is best thought of as a zone rather than a single exact price. Price may poke through it briefly or turn a few pips below it.
Where resistance commonly forms
- Previous swing highs
- Round numbers, such as 1.1000 or 150.00
- Former support levels that have broken (the "role reversal" idea)
- Downward-sloping trendlines and moving averages
- Fibonacci retracement levels within a downtrend
How traders use it
- Exit planning. Long traders may place a take-profit just below resistance, before the crowd of sellers.
- Short entries. Some traders look for selling opportunities when price rejects resistance, with a stop placed above the zone.
- Breakouts. A decisive close above resistance can signal that buyers have absorbed the selling, and the old ceiling may then act as a floor.
Example
Assume (illustratively) EUR/USD has turned lower near 1.1000 twice. A trader long from 1.0920 sets a take-profit at 1.0990, ten pips below the level, rather than at 1.1000 itself. If price stalls at 1.0995 again, the order fills. A trader aiming exactly at 1.1000 would miss it.
Why it matters
Resistance helps frame realistic targets and reveals where a move may struggle. It is not a wall: levels break regularly, especially around news. The more times a level is tested, the more attention it draws, but frequent tests can also weaken it as resting orders are used up. Learn to draw levels in the Support and Resistance lesson.
